1. The active (engagement) self-ligating bracket Active engagement means that the wire is pressed into the slot by a (leaf) spring - usually called
"clip" - which is the active part in the system. It´s comparable with regular engagement by ligatures. The degree of engagement is dependent on wire dimensions - as to be seen in the picture below. At small dimensions (on average below .018x.018) the clip remains passive what helps to make the long distance movements in this period of treatment easier and faster.
With increasing alignment job is changing. Now the teeth have to be fixed in their best position - supported by the increasing power of the clip. (Pictures:

2. The passive (engagement) self-ligating bracket
It wouldn´t be wrong to call this attachment "reversible convertible". It has a tube/ lumen of constant
dimensions which can be opened at one side by a slide mechanism or may have
sideward clasps. (Picture: Damon 3, Ormco)

The scope of the wire in the tube is
limited by the wire´s dimension which is growing from thin-round to space
filling-rectangular like in every archwire sequence. The Friction increases with
the degreee of deflection of the wire. In early treatment, with more or
less large steps between the brackets, friction is quite high and decreases with
improving alignment. Finally in case of perfect alignment the friction
disappears. In order to upright teeth as easy and fast as possible super elastic
wires with one space filling dimension: 14x25, 16x25, 18x25 ... are the best
choice for sequence.

Quick Self-Ligating Bracket

Forestadent’s Quick self-ligating bracket clip remains passive with a wire as
large as .018" x .018" or .016" x .022" and becomes
partially or fully active with increasingly larger wires. According to the
manufacturer, the nickel-free Quick
bracket is the smallest one-piece self-ligating bracket on the market and
features a clip that cannot fall off or be pushed out. Rounded slot edges and
smooth clip surfaces are designed to reduce friction and improve patient
comfort.
